Banana is one of the most widely grown fruits in Assam, thriving in the humid subtropical climate and fertile alluvial plains of the Brahmaputra valley. The state produces several indigenous varieties, each distinct in flavor, color, and texture. Assamese households traditionally cultivate bananas not just as a fruit but as a symbol of prosperity and purity, used in almost every festival, religious ceremony, and daily meal.
The fruit is rich in potassium, fiber, and natural sugars, making it a wholesome energy source. Apart from being eaten fresh, bananas are also used to prepare traditional dishes such as pitha (rice cakes) and pitika (mash dishes). Even the stem, flower, and leaves are used in Assamese cuisine, showcasing the plant’s complete utility.
Specialty: Multiple indigenous varieties, used in both food and rituals, organically cultivated in fertile plains.
